What Is pelvic floor physical therapy?
Great Question! Pelvic floor physical therapy is specialized physical therapy to be able to treat dysfunction of the musculoskeletal and nervous system in and around the pelvis.
Treatment can assist in relieving symptoms of urinary incontinence, constipation or bowel dysfunction, pain in your pelvis, hips, or back, pelvic organ prolapse, prenatal, pregnancy, and postpartum pain or movement dysfunction so that you can get back to the things you love with less stress or worry!
What are the signs and symptoms of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction?
Some signs and symptoms include urinary leakage (incontinence), urinary urgency or going to the bathroom too often (frequency), getting up to urinate >1x/night, low back or pelvic pain, constipation, a feeling of increased pressure in the pelvic floor or having the sensation your organs are falling out, pain or discomfort with sexual activity. If you don’t see what your experiencing, just give us a call. We work with ALL the things no one likes talking about!
Can you treat my problems?
YES! We specialize in pelvic health issues and have seen a wide variety of problems. We’ve never had someone come in who didn’t find benefit in the session.
If you have questions, make sure to give us a call. You’ll speak with the physical therapist to make sure we are the right fit for you.
Do you treat other body parts?
YES! As an orthopedic clinical specialist (OCS), I believe in a whole body approach and treat many other conditions including those impacting the cervical spine, shoulders, upper/mid back, hips, knees and foot/ankle. The pelvic floor doesn’t work in isolation, so we shouldn’t treat it that way either!
Do you only treat women in the post partum period?
No, we treat women of all ages in different phases of life, independent of if they’ve had children.
Pelvic floor dysfunction and musculoskeletal issues impact people across the lifespan and we believe everyone deserves quality care to address their needs.
Do I need a physician referral?
North Carolina has direct access laws that do not require a physician referral. You can just schedule your evaluation. We can send info to your doctor so they know we are working with you.
In Indiana you do not need a referral to have an evaluation and start therapy. If care is needed past 6 weeks, then a physician referral is required.
For Birth Prep Sessions, no referral is needed.
What can I expect at my initial evaluation/appointment?
Your first in-person session will start with a discussion of what you’re experiencing and your goals in seeking Physical Therapy. It will also include a physical examination. This may include an examination of the low back, abdominals, hips, and pelvic floor muscles, depending upon your symptoms. You should wear comfortable clothes and shoes and expect to be doing active movements (squat, single leg balance etc. )
If you are being seen virtually, you will be provided with a HIPAA compliant link for video conferencing. We will review your intake paperwork and you will be asked to perform movements to assist the therapist in evaluating your physical therapy needs, so please wear comfortable clothing. Please note that for virtual appointments, the video must be able to capture your whole body.
Most initial evaluations last about 60 minutes. At the end of the first session we will come up with a plan of care and schedule follow up appointments.
Can’t I just follow an app?
Apps can be helpful for exercise progression at home, but they don’t actually assess you as an individual. How do you know the exercises are right for you? and how do you know you are doing them well? We are happy to support you and set you up for success.
What if physical therapy didn’t work for me before? Can you help?
Yes. We treat with a very different approach than standard physical therapy. Many of our other clients have been to other therapists and found that pelvic floor physical therapy was the missing puzzle piece!
